One of the best things about bullet journaling is the simplicity of the system. There are very few rules or guidelines to follow. This gives you lots of freedom and flexibility when it comes to making your bullet journal work for your lifestyle.
Just Get Started
You can spend hours reading blogs, browsing Pinterest and Instagram and even watch a ton of videos on YouTube to get started. It can get overwhelming. But you’re not going to get a real feel for how it works and what will work for you until you do it yourself.
Just get an inexpensive notebook to start. Then follow the basic bullet journal layout with an index, key, monthly and weekly spreads. Start tracking your daily tasks and see how it feels. Then you can add a few lists or collections to get a feel for what type of information is useful to you and what isn’t. Try tracking important lifestyle habits and see what works for you.
Keep It Simple
When you first start out bullet journaling, it’s probably going to be tempting to experiment with elaborate spreads and write down and track every single thing. You may have lots of ideas for collections you want to start.
It’s great to have enthusiasm at the beginning and while there’s nothing wrong with experimenting, be careful about trying to track everything and becoming overwhelmed. It might become a source of guilt, and you might even start to dread bullet journaling.
Remember that bullet journaling is simply a tool. It’s okay to have a minimalist approach. Start small and figure out what works. Think about what’s sustainable for you to write down and track over the long run. And remember to keep in mind that the point of bullet journaling is to reduce stress, not add to your workload.
Don’t Be Afraid To Rip Things Out And Start Over
If you find that something isn’t working for you, don’t be afraid to rip it out. Maybe you thought that tracking your moods was a good idea, but then found you couldn’t keep up with it. Just go ahead and rip out that page.
If your layout or spread isn’t working for you, don’t be afraid to toss it and start over. There’s always a fresh new page to write on. This is exactly why you should start out with a small and inexpensive notebook. Just grab another one if you need to and start over. Eventually you’ll find the setup and system that’s right for you.
Tweak It And Change It Until It Works For You
Expect a few weeks or more of testing and tweaking until you figure out what works for you. We all lead different lifestyles, have different situations and our brains all work differently. Our bullet journals should reflect that. Just keep working on it until you come up with a system that feels natural and works for you. You’ll know it when you get there. The main goal is to have a bullet journal setup that makes your life easier, less stressed and helps you stay organized without becoming burdened by it.
